Key Titanium Plate Grades & Industry Selection Guide

Grade 2 Titanium Plate (UNS R50400) Industrial Workhorse

Commercially Pure Grade 2 is the most widely utilized titanium plate grade across global process industries. It provides an outstanding balance of moderate strength, exceptional ductility, and superior resistance to oxidizing media, seawater, and organic acids. Ideal for heat exchangers, reaction vessels, desalination plants, and chlor-alkali systems.

Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Alloy Plate (UNS R56400) High Strength & Aerospace Grade

Grade 5 is an alpha-beta titanium alloy containing 6% Aluminum and 4% Vanadium. It delivers double the yield strength of Grade 2 pure titanium while maintaining light weight and impressive fatigue limits. Extensively specified in aerospace structural frames, jet turbine components, offshore oil tools, and high-performance racing parts.

Grade 7 Titanium Palladium Alloy Plate (UNS R52400) Severe Acid Resistance

Grade 7 is physical and mechanical twin to Grade 2, but augmented with 0.12% to 0.25% Palladium. This addition dramatically increases corrosion resistance in dilute hydrochloric and sulfuric acids under high temperatures and crevice conditions.

Grade 23 Ti-6Al-4V ELI Titanium Plate (UNS R56401) Medical & Cryogenic Grade

Grade 23 is an Extra Low Interstitial (ELI) version of Grade 5. Reduced interstitial elements (oxygen, nitrogen, iron) yield superior fracture toughness and ductility at cryogenic temperatures, making it the preferred alloy for medical implants and aerospace cryogenic tanks.

Rigorous Inspection Protocols

Every titanium plate order is verified through thorough inspection procedures:

  • Chemical Composition Verification: Spectrometric analysis for compliance with ASTM B265 limits.
  • Mechanical Property Testing: Room temperature tensile, yield, elongation, and bend testing.
  • Ultrasonic Inspection (UT): Performed according to AMS 2631 / ASTM A578 to detect micro-porosity, cracks, and internal inclusions.
  • Dimensional & Surface Inspection: Laser checking of flat tolerance, diagonal squareness, thickness uniformity, and surface finish.

Global Application Areas

Chemical & Petrochemical

Used for shell-and-tube heat exchangers, PTA plants, reaction vessels, chlor-alkali electrolysis cells, and acid piping systems.

Aerospace & Defense

Structural airframe panels, turbine engine nacelles, heat shields, missile casings, and high-stress fastener blank plates.

Marine & Offshore Engineering

Desalination evaporators, submarine pressure hulls, offshore platform cooling loops, and subsea riser components resistant to marine biofouling.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between Titanium Sheet and Titanium Plate?
By standard industry definition, titanium sheets are under 6.0 mm (0.236 inches) in thickness, usually produced via cold rolling to deliver a bright surface and tight tolerance. Titanium plates are 6.0 mm and thicker, produced by hot rolling for heavy-duty structural, chemical vessel, and mechanical machining applications.
What standard mill test documentation is provided?
We provide an official EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate with every shipment. The MTC includes chemical composition, heat number, mechanical test values (tensile strength, yield strength, elongation), heat treatment conditions, non-destructive testing (NDT/UT) results, and dimensional check records.
Can Almerca Titanium provide cut-to-size plates based on custom drawings?
Yes. We offer in-house CNC precision processing including waterjet cutting, laser shearing, beveling, surface grinding, and hole drilling. Send us your CAD drawings (DXF, DWG, PDF) for an accurate quote.
What is the typical lead time for titanium plate orders?
Standard stock items (Grade 2 and Grade 5 plates in common standard dimensions) can ship within 3–7 business days. Custom thickness, special alloy grades, or cut-to-size items usually take 10–20 days depending on quantity and specification requirements.
